EIGHT policemen at Khaosaming police station in Trat province all caught Covid while performing their duties and are now quarantined at home, TV Channel 7 said today (Mar, 21).
The district public health officials went to the police station to carry ATK test on all the officers there today and found that two more were infected increasing the total to eight from six earlier confirmed.
Pol. Col. Chatchawan Rodkhamwong, the police station’s superintendent, said the eight officers got infected while investigating crime and accidents which led them to coming into close contact with various people.
As a result of this many policemen having fallen sick in one go this police station has had to postpone cases until they recover.
Meanwhile the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said there were 23,441 cases today, with this being lower than the peak of 27,000 reached last week. This total does not include the 15,177 people who tested positive on ATK and are awaiting confirmation of infection.
Today’s total of 88 fatalities is a new high in the current Omicron wave while 1,464 patients are hospitalised for pneumonia with 514 requiring oxygen.
Hospital bed occupancy rate is 25.8 percent with 240,339 patients currently undergoing treatment of whom 62,000 are in hospitals and hospitels while 108,000 are either isolated at home or at community centres.
Today’s top ten worst-hit provinces are Bangkok with 2,872 cases, Nakhon Si Thammarat 1,626 and Chonburi 1,132 followed by Samut Sakon, Samut Prakan, Rayong, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Chachoengsao and Ratchaburi .
At the sametime Assoc. Prof. Teera Worathanarat of Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Medicine said within one week pneumonia cases had increased by 8.2 percent to 1,464 and oxygen intubation by 13.46 percent to 514.
He pointed out that the pandemic remains strong in Thailand with the downtrend taking 1.5 times longer than an uptrend.
Many countries have had repeated outbreaks of BA.2 strains and Thailand still needs to keep a firm control and prevent the spread of infection to head off a new uptrend, he added.
