Suspect in murder of Thai couple in Taiwan surrenders, being quizzed

THE SUSPECT in the murder of a Thai couple in Taiwan with the woman five-month pregnant with twins surrendered to Chiang Mai police and is now being flown to Bangkok on a helicopter for interrogation at the Crime Suppression Division with National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Suwat Chaengyodsuk personally doing so from 4 p.m. onwards , Naewna newspaper said today (June 17).

However the suspect, Mr. Santi (surname withheld), has initially denied killing  Ms. Potjanee Sae Li, or Ami, and her husband, only identified as Mr. Prasert, and leaving their bodies in the boot of a BMW sedan at a train station and then flying back home.

Meanwhile Mr. Prayut Petchkun, deputy spokesperson of the Attorney General’s Office, said this case could be prosecuted in Thailand if the victims’ relatives so requested, with this being in accordance with Section 8 of the Criminal Code.

This section states that for offenses related to life or murder committed outside the country as detailed in Section 288 of the Criminal Code should the suspect be a Thai national then he/she could be prosecuted in Thailand.

The Attorney General’s Office has a foreign section with Mr. Jumpol Phanthusomrit as the head and he will be coordinating with Taiwanese authorities with the two countries not having an extradition treaty.

Asked what would happen if Taiwan wanted to extradite the suspect, Prayut said if that happened then the Taiwanese request would enter the extradition process but as the two countries do not have an extradition treaty the diplomatic approach would have to come through the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office.

However he is certain that because the suspect is a Thai citizen it would not be necessary to extradite him to Taiwan with prosecution allowed under Criminal Code’s Section 8.
