Sections of Chaeng Wattana, Samut Prakan roads subside

HEAVY RAIN lasting days led to a large sinkhole appearing on Chaeng Wattana road and a 200-metre stretch of a secondary road that is being built in Samut Prakan also caving in, Naewna newspaper said today (Sept. 11).

The two-metre wide, five-metre long and two-metre deep sinkhole is in front of Health Land at the entrance of Soi Chaengwattana – Pak Kret 29 with this causing huge traffic jams in the area.

Pol. Lt. Col. Thapanpong Puengmee, an inspector at Pak Kret police station, said this section of Chaeng Wattana road subsided at 4 a.m. this morning.

There is a manhole at this point to lay an underground pipe for electrical wires but the continuous heavy rain lasting several days and ensuing floods weakened it further leading to the cave-in.

Preliminary repair work is already underway with crushed stones poured in and this to be topped with asphalt . It is expected that the job will be completed this afternoon.

Motorists were advised to avoid going through Tiwanon road and instead turn into Muang Thong Thani, drive down Bond Street and exit at the other gateway at which point they could get on the expressway.

Meanwhile in Samut Prakan the red gravel Khun Samut Chin road in Laem Fa Pha subdistrict, Phra Samut Chedi district, subsided two metres across a 200-metre stretch leading to a hundred households and Wat Khun Samut Chin being cut off as it is hazardous for large vehicles to go through.

Mr. Sonthaya Taengurai, head Laem Fah Pha Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, said this road was being constructed by Samut Prakan Rural Roads to connect the secondary road to the main road. However after three years of work it has not yet been completed.

Heavy rain lasting days together with there being shrimp and fish farms along both sides of the red gravel road triggered the subsidence. However Disaster Prevention and Mitigation  Department officials and the subdistrict’s civil engineers had placed metal sheets and flags along the subsided stretch as an initial step to ensure safety.
