KANCHANA SILPA-ARCHA has resigned as top leader of the Chart Thai Pattana Party, prompting an across-the-board change of executive members of the fourth-largest coalition partner.

Kanchana, daughter of the late former prime minister Banharn Silpa-archa and sister of Natural Resources & Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa, has called it quits as top leader of the Chart Thai Pattana Party, the post which she has quietly assumed without any cabinet seat taken in concurrent fashion over the last few years, thus immediately resulting in the automatic dissolution of the party’s executive board and the setting up of a new one next week.

Chart Thai Pattana MP Nikorn Chamnong confirmed today (Sept. 26) a general caucus of party members is scheduled for Oct. 3 to pick a new party leader and name 19-plus members of the party’s executive board as part of the ongoing preparations for nationwide electoral campaigns.

It remains to be seen whether Varawut, late Banharn’s only son, and Deputy Agriculture & Cooperatives Minister Prapat Bhotasuton will be named top party leader and party secretary-general respectively. Prapat had earlier assumed the post of secretary-general of the coalition party.

Members of a partisan committee in charge of selecting candidates to run for MPs under the Chart Thai Pattana banners will also be named alongside the new party boss and the new executive board members, Nikorn said.

The Chart Thai Pattana Party which has earlier secured Supanburi as a major partisan stronghold currently has 12 MPs, compared to several dozens during the time of the late Banharn.
