A RETIRED teacher was arrested on charges of defrauding the public after posting a message on his Facebook page to raise funds for a blessing ceremony today (Dec. 17) with donations reaching almost a million baht, Sanook.com said.
The suspect, only identified as Mr. Enamsamuti who lives in Bangkok’s Suan Luang area, fully cooperated with Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau police and stated that he did not have any bad intentions.
The suspect pointed out that in his opinion if science cannot resolve problems then ceremonies such as Bai Sri, which is performed to bestow happiness and prosperity to a person or place, might help.
Pol. Maj. Gen. Wiwat Khamchamnan, deputy chief of Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau, said the suspect had not committed an offence under Criminal Code Section 112, also known as the lese majeste law, but would be charged with defrauding the public under the Criminal Code sections 343 and 344 and with importing false information into the computer system under Section 14(1) . He faces maximum five years imprisonment and a fine not exceeding 100,000 baht.
He has also been found to have violated the Fundraising Control Act B.E. 2487 (1944) with this carrying a 200 baht fine.
However the suspect accepted some of the charges but denied the others.
