POLICE have launched a serious disciplinary inquiry over payoff by a Chinese grey capitalist gang to a 191 and Department of Special Investigation team during a raid of a house in Thungmahamek area and then walked free, Naewna newspaper said this afternoon (Jan. 20).
Pol. Maj. Gen, Archayon Kraithong, the police spokesman, said the police team had demanded over 9 million baht from the Chinese suspects to not arrest them during a raid of the house which was the residence of former consul of Republic of Nauru, an island country and microstate in Oceania, and was used by the gang as a hideout and passport-forging den.
Altogether nine 191 policemen and two senior officers, one the Deputy Chief of 191 police and the other the Deputy Chief of Metropolitan Police, are being investigated with the senior chiefs being questioned over their supervision of policemen under their charge who violated regulations.
Coordination between police units will also be assessed and adjustment made to prevent such errors in future. Normally inter-departmental work is well-controlled at all levels.
If the fact-finding committee finds that any officers had committed wrongdoing action will be taken in a transparent manner.
Investigators at Thungmahamek police station have questioned people living nearby by this residence.
They are also tracing the missing large bribe and this is not likely to be difficult to find, Pol. Maj. Gen, Archayon said.
