A GUNMAN who shot and injured two passengers on a minibus travelling from Phuket to Phatthalung early this morning (Feb.10) later shot himself dead thus ending the siege that lasted almost five hours, Naewna newspaper said.
After the shooting occurred at approximately 6.30 a.m. just a kilometre after the minibus had left Phuket Bus Terminal with nine passengers, the driver and his assistant, everyone except the gunman quickly ran out after it was parked by the roadside in Koh Kaew subdistrict, Mueang district.
Police identified the suspect as a former conscript whose name is Nawin (surname withheld), a resident of Ao Luek district, Krabi province, by going through the surveillance camera clips at the bus terminal.
Initially it was reported that police had fired tear gas and stormed the minibus and captured the gunman who was then taken to hospital because he was choking.
However at 11.10 a.m. it was revealed that the gunman had in fact shot himself dead in the vehicle. As none of the policemen heard gunshots going off when they surrounded the vehicle it is now being ascertained whether he had killed himself before they got there.
