Mountains ablaze in Nakhon Nayok, Phetchabun

A HUGE FIRE has been racing through three mountains in Nakhon Nayok province just northeast of Bangkok since last night (Mar. 29) while equally fierce fires have been spreading unchecked across a mountain and a forest park in north-central Phetchabun province for over 36 hours, and Naewna newspaper said today.

The blaze in Nakhon Nayok broke out at around midnight and  first spread on Khao Laem and Khao Chalud mountains behind Chulachomklao Royal Military Academy’s shooting range then reached one side of Khao Tabak.

Fire engines from Sarika and Khao Phra subdistrict administrative organisations were on hand to prevent it from spreading to residential zones.

Nakhon Nayok Governor Bancha Chaowrin set up a forest fire command centre and requested deployment of KA-32 helicopters by the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation to help put it out as well as quickly send other necessary equipment.

Meanwhile the huge fire in Khao Kho district, Phetchabun province, has turned a mountain into an inferno after spreading for over 36 hours upon starting on Tuesday evening (Mar. 28).

This uncontrolled blaze began at  Ratchamangkhalaphisek viewpoint on the left side of Highway No. 12, or Phitsanulok-LomSak road. Forestry officials and firemen with their fire engines have been extinguishing the fire as it gets close to the road but cannot go up the steep mountain to do so.

Officials said firefighting helicopters are needed to put it out or hope for it to rain otherwise the blaze will continue to spread widely.

Reporters at the scene said aside from the huge blaze at Khao Kho there is also  a forest fire at Wang Tha Di forest park, which lies on the eastern side of this province and forms a boundary with Loei province.

This is a lush forest with a lot of wildlife living there and this blaze too had started on Tuesday night and is raging non-stop.

Locals are worried that these animals will die and urge that modern equipment and helicopters be quickly sent to put them out.
