THERE were 11 underwater earthquakes around India’s Nicobar Islands from yesterday afternoon till evening (Apr. 9) with magnitude ranging from 3.9-5.7 on the Richter scale and at a depth of 10 kilometres, TV Channel 7 said.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation said the seventh underwater quake, of 5.6-magnitude, struck at 5.31 p.m. Thai time with this being 511 km northwest of Phuket’s Mueang district but there was no impact on Thailand.
The eighth one, measured at 4.6 in magnitude, struck at 5.39 p.m.464 km from Phuket while the 11th one, reaching 5.7 in magnitude, occurred at 7.17 p.m. 475 km from Phuket.
Both the National Disaster Warning Centre and the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation will notify the public of any further development.
The Nicobar Islands, which are part of India, cover a land area of 1,841 square kilometres (711 sq mi) and had a population of 36,844 during the 2011 Census, Wikipedia said.
