Chonburi police chief being transferred as extortion charges surface

NATIONAL Police Chief Pol. Gen. Damrongsak Kittipraphat is getting ready to transfer Chonburi Police Chief Pol. Maj. Gen. Kumpol Leelaprapaporn to the headquarters in Bangkok for an indefinite period after charges that he and nine other policemen extorted over 140 million baht from six online gambling website operators emerged, Matichon newspaper said this morning (June 17).

A committee is also being set up to investigate the senior police officer for serious disciplinary violations.

Action is being taken after Khu Khot police station in Pathum Thani province filed extortion charges against Police Cyber Taskforce (PCT) team members in Chonburi and the provincial police chief for allegedly raking in over 140 million baht by shaking down online gambling website operators six times.

The six victims reported the extortion to Khu Khot police investigators and asked that legal action be taken against the Chonburi police chief and nine other policemen on the charges of taking bribes or other benefits for oneself or others, failing to perform their duty and threatening others to agree to their demands.

The victims related that after being arrested in Pathum Thani area by the Chonburi police team Pol. Maj. Gen. Kumpol came to the room where they were being interrogated and told them, “How much do you love the commander, write that down.”
