AFTER FOUR rounds of voting member states of Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) today (June 21) selected Serbia as host of Specialised Expo 2027, taking place from May 15 to August 15, 2027, with Phuket being among four other candidates that lost out.
Aside from Serbia, where the expo will be held in Belgrade under the theme “Play for Humanity: Sport and Music for All”, and Phuket with its theme being “Future of Life: Living in Harmony, Sharing Prosperity”, the other three candidates in the running were as follows:
– The United States (Minnesota) with the theme “Healthy People, Healthy Planet: Wellness and Well-Being for All”;
– Spain (Malaga) with the theme “The Urban Era: towards the Sustainable City”;
– Argentina (Bariloche) with the theme “Nature + Technology = Sustainable Energy. A viable future for humanity”.
Phuket Governor Narong Woonciew thanked the people in Phuket and across the nation as well as all relevant agencies especially Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau and the Foreign and Commerce ministries for having fully supported this attempt to secure the hosting of the next Expo.
“Today we haven’t reached this goal. However, while we have not yet been successful, the development of Phuket continues to reach the Future of Life goal that we have set.
“We must continue to develop, and we will do so,” he said.
