House speaker tussle drags on till tomorrow

MOVE Forward and Pheu Thai parties failed to end their tussle for the House speaker post at an eight-party meeting today (July 2) and now hope to reach an agreement tomorrow just a day before the first House meeting to pick the head of the legislative branch, Naewna newspaper said.

At a joint press conference Move Forward leader/prime minister-designate Pita Limjaroenrat said the eight coalition partners did briefly discuss this issue and everything went well with progress steadily being made but Pheu Thai needed more time to discuss it.

When asked if a different person was being nominated for this post, Pita urged reporters to not broach a new subject as this affected government formation and confused people thus impacting public confidence and the stock market as well.

Asked if the two parties reached different conclusions on this issue what would he do, Pita again told reporters not to broach a new subject with there being a procedure for everything.

Meanwhile Pheu Thai leader Chonlanan Srikaew said the two parties’ negotiating teams informed the meeting about the outcome of informal talks.

However as his party had various work processes with there being many people working together and different opinions among the rank and file it was necessary to hold internal talks tomorrow, July 3.

“I am confident that at noon on July 3 we will definitely reach a conclusion and it will be helpful in forming the government,” he said.

Prachachart leader Wan Muhammad Nor Matha said his party wanted a democratic government set up as soon as possible and was willing to make sacrifices to reach this goal. His party, which is the third largest coalition partner following the May 14 election, had been eying one of the two deputy House speaker posts.

“Even though there is only over 40 hours left, these 40 hours are meaningful. The eight parties want Move Forward and Pheu Thai to turn the remaining time into a victory for democratic people otherwise the anti-democratic parties are ready to move in,” he said.
