WAN MUHAMAD NOOR MATHA was today (July 4) unrivalled and named House speaker.
No other MPs were named to compete with Wan Noor for House speaker who concurrently assumes the post of Parliament President.
Given the top seat of the legislative branch, Wan Noor has already resigned as leader of the Prachachart, one of the eight coalition partners led by the Move Forward, confirmed Prachachart secretary-general/MP Tawee Sodsong.
His resignation as Prachachart leader was primarily intended to keep himself practically neutral whilst chairing varied meetings at parliament, Tawee said.
The successful naming of Wan Noor who concurrently assumes the post of Parliament President apparently ended weeks of a tug-of-war for the post between the Move Forward and Pheu Thai.
Wan Noor who contested last May’s general election as the No.1 candidate in party-listed mode used to perform as House speaker decades earlier.
Deputy Prachachart leader Worawi Makudi has become acting leader of the nine-MP party pending the naming of a new leader during a general caucus yet to be scheduled.
Meanwhile, Move Forward MP Padipat Santipada was voted first deputy House speaker, largely defeating Ruam Thai Sang Chart MP Wittaya Kaewparadai in a secret voting, whilst Pheu Thai MP Pichet Chuamuangpan was unrivalled and named second deputy House speaker.
A joint House/Senate meeting will be held next week for MPs and senators to pick Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat and any possible rivals for prime minister.
