Bridge over Ping river collapses after heavy rain

AN OLD BRIDGE crossing Ping river and connecting Chiang Mai’s Chom Thong district to Lamphun’s Wiang Nong Long district dramatically collapsed last evening (Sep. 30) with vibrations felt throughout the neighbouring area after torrential rain lashed many parts of the North particularly the upper part of this river, Sanook.com said this morning.

Mr. Chatchai Chomdet, senior civil engineer, and Mr. Somphong Monkaew, director of Chiang Mai rural roads office, quickly alerted Governor Nirat Pongsitthaworn that Wang Sakaeng Bridge had collapsed at 5.31 p.m. due to the heavy rain and floods but fortunately there were no casualties.

However local residents in both provinces were happy that this bridge gave way because it had subsided to the point of being unusable. The authorities had to close it in October last year as vehicles could no longer pass through.

Even so, local people continued to ride bicycles and motorcycles across the dangerous bridge because a detour is another 10 kilometres.

Moreover no repairs had been made over the past year until it finally collapsed last evening.
