VILLAGERS IN 10 SOUTHERN provinces were today (Nov.23) alerted of torrential rainwater and flashfloods forecast to occur as of the upcoming weekend.
Department of Disaster Prevention & Mitigation director-general Chaiwat Junthirapong cautioned villagers in Songkhla, Phatthalung, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat to watch out for imminent torrential rainwater and flashfloods due to forecast heavy downpour in current monsoon season between Nov.25 and Nov.30.
In particular, those living in low-lying terrains were advised to prepare their family members and property for possible evacuation to higher grounds due to anticipated inundation in the current monsoon season.
Meanwhile, villagers in five other southern provinces, including Phuket, Krabi, Trang, Nakhon Sri Thammarat and Surat Thani, were cautioned to brace for the likelihood that the volume of rainwater in their small- and medium-sized reservoirs will exponentially increase up to 80% of their full capacity due to heavy downpour and might probably cause flashfloods with excessive water spilling out of them.
Southern rivers including Bang Nara River, Saiburi River, Su-ngai Kolok River and Pattani River as well as their tributaries will likely overflow and flood surrounding, low-lying terrains, either with or without levees, according to the department chief.
