PM zeroing in on rogue road projects in Isaan

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

PRIME MINISTER SRETTHA Thavisin might probably launch investigation into alleged conspiracies amongst rogue contractors and corrupt local administrators over the bidding process for road construction projects throughout the northeastern region.

Certain profiteering contractors and executive officials of varied municipalities and subdistrict administrations in a dozen Isaan provinces have been accused of mutually conniving with one another to compromise the bidding process and finally grab a combined sum of over 100 million baht in undue gains from the planned construction of roads, either paved with asphalt or concrete.

The road construction projects may be either funded by the relevant municipalities or subdistrict administrative bodies or the Rural Roads Department under care of the Ministry of Transport.

Srettha said he is yet awaiting official reports pertaining to suspicious misconducts on the part of those local administrators and would promptly order for the large-scale investigation into the alleged bidding conspiracies and bring any alleged wrongdoers to justice.

The prime minister said he has not as yet consulted with Deputy Prime Minister-cum-Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul who is currently in charge of all municipalities and subdistrict administrative organisations, better known as Or Bor Tor, in the provinces.

Some politicians, ranging from mayors, municipality councillors, Or Bor Tor heads, Or Bor Tor councillors to provincial councillors and constituency-based MPs, could probably be more or less involved in the alleged conspiracies, albeit in surreptitious fashion.
