CONSUMER spending during the New Year festival reached 54.4 billion baht while foreign tourism income last year totalled 1.2 trillion baht, TV Channel 7 said today (Jan. 3).
Mr. Chai Watcharong, a spokesman for the Prime Minister’s Office, said tourism promotion such as waiving visa requirements for tourists from China, Kazakhstan, India and Taiwan, promoting secondary cities as tourist destination, organising New Year festival in 10 provinces across the country and promoting soft power had led to over 28 million tourists visiting the country last year.
Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has set a goal to generate 3.5 trillion baht from tourism this year, up from 3 trillion baht, with 1 trillion baht to come from domestic tourism and 2.5 trillion baht from foreign tourists.
The Prime Minister is certain good cooperation of the Thai people would ensure it would not be difficult to achieve this goal.
