IN THE biggest drug bust ever recorded in northeastern Chaiyaphum province six million methamphetamine pills were seized from a pickup truck with the driver trafficking the drug also arrested, Naewna newspaper said today (Mar. 20).
Announcing the record drug seizure at Chaiyaphum provincial police building today were Pol. Lt. Gen. Thakur Nattheesri, commander of Provincial Police Region 3, Pol. Maj. Gen. Rapeepong Sukpaiboon, deputy commander of Provincial Police Region 3, Pol. Maj. Gen. Suchat Klaichanpong, Chaiyaphum provincial police commander, Chaiyaphum Governor Mr. Anant Nakniyom and Chaiyaphum Deputy Governor Mr. Sombat Traisak.
At approximately 4 p.m. yesterday Region 3’s narcotics control unit told Chaiyaphum provincial police station and Highway Police that a vehicle carrying a large amount of drugs is travelling from upper northeastern Loei province to this central northeastern province and to set up checkpoints and a unit to chase any suspicious vehicles.
However while this was done, because of heavy rain the police team headed back to the city. Even so, some of them passed through the bypass road to look for any suspicious vehicles.
Along the way they saw this pickup truck parked by the roadside with the driver, later identified as Mr. Wiset, or Tom, 43, changing the front tire.
Upon inspecting the vehicle they found 15 large sacks with each holding 400,000 meth pills totalling 6 million.
Upon being questioned Wiset admitted that he was hired to transport this big lot of meth pills for 50,000 baht and had already done so three times this month.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Thakur said he has been following up on a drug transport network called “Pilot” with the members smuggling drugs further inland. Last month an equal amount of 6 million meth pills was seized in upper northeastern Bueng Kan province, likely heading for Loei then on to Chaiyaphum.
