THE MURDER of a highway policeman at a party given by a former village headman in Mueang district of Nakhon Pathom province last September led to 15 policemen and seven civilians including the ex-village headman being jailed for 1.4-2 years for dereliction of duty and helping officers in wrongful conduct today (Apr. 9), Naewna newspaper said.
The Central Criminal Court had dismissed the charges against one policeman.
This case stemmed from the shooting to death of Pol. Maj. Siwakorn Saibua, or Inspector Bank, and injury of Pol. Lt. Col. Wasin Panpee during a party at the house of ex-village headman Mr. Praween Chanklai, or Kamnan Nok, 34, at Mueang district of Nakhon Pathom province on the night of Sep. 6.
Praween’s subordinate, Mr. Thananchai Manmak, or Nong Thapha, 45, had fled after the shooting but was tracked down in Kanchanaburi where he was shot dead in an exchange of gunfire with police.
Although the defendants all denied the charges, the court considered the testimony and evidence presented by both sides and found that all defendants except one of them were guilty as charged.
Defendants number 1, 3, 5 were jailed for two years each; defendants number 4,6 -13, 15-20,23 for 1 year and 4 months each; defendant 21 was jailed for 1 year, 9 months, 21 days; defendant 22, that is Kamnan Nok, jailed for 2 years.
Defendants 9 -11 ,19,20,23 got two-year suspended sentences while the charge was dropped against defendant number 14.
Kamnan Nok faces another case on charges of attempting to kill Pol. Maj. Siwakorn with this case still being considered by the Criminal Court.
