WITH Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin having forwarded the appointment of Mr. Maris Sangiampong to His Majesty the King for royal endorsement, a background check shows he is close to de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra, Naewna newspaper said today (Apr. 30).
Maris had been appointed the ambassador to a few countries during the administrations of both former prime ministers Thaksin Shinawatra and his sister Yingluck Shinawatra, including to Australia, Republic of Fiji, Nepal and Republic of Vanuatu.
He was an adviser to outgoing foreign minister Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara and also resigned when he did so.
In the past Maris, who graduated from Ramkhamhaeng University with a bachelor’s degree in political science and public administration and Ohio University with a master’s degree in political science and international relations, had been criticised for having been close to Thaksin from the time the former prime minister was foreign minister under Chuan Leekpai’s government.
Meanwhile Mr. Kittichai Treerachataphong , CEO of Thanulux Plc (TNL), informed the Stock Exchange of Thailand that Maris had resigned from his positions as the company’s director, independent director and audit committee member due to personal duties with this effective immediately.
