SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY are still ranking among a total of 24 football clubs in the English Championship after surviving tonight’s (May 4) final game of the season under German manager Danny Rohl.
Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Liam Palmer and striker Josh Windass scored a 2-0 win over Sunderland in the first half of the away game to finally keep the Owls staying in the second tier of the English football system, leaving Birmingham, Huddersfield and Rotherham relegated to the third-tiered League 1.
The Championship club, owned by Dejpon Chansiri whose family runs Thai Union Group, the world’s largest canned tuna manufacturer, will likely sign several outstanding players whilst Rohl has earlier confirmed to stay with the Owls next season.
Anticipated to have their contract extended in the summer are midfielder Barry Bannan who captains the Owls, striker Callum Paterson, Windass and Palmer.
A few others who are currently on loan are expected to be signed by the Owls including striker Ike Ugbo from French Ligue 2 club Troyes, winger Ian Poveda from Leeds and goalkeeper James Beadle from Brighton & Hove Albion, among others.
Leicester City, owned by another Thai businessperson, Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha of duty-free retail chain King Power Group, have won the 2023/2024 Championship title and are automatically returning to the top tier after playing the second tier’s season which ended tonight.
