A SECOND minor earthquake measuring 2.2 magnitude and with a very shallow depth of 2 kilometres hit Koh Samui at 8.31 a.m. this morning (June 1) after the resort island was rattled by a similar light quake two days ago, Naewna newspaper and Amarin TV said.
The quake that hit Koh Samui at 8.24 a.m. last Thursday (May 30) was measured at 2.4 magnitude with the depth likewise very shallow at 4 kilometres.
Centred at Bo Phut subdistrict, many people on the island felt this morning’s quake, especially those living in single-storey houses.
One man said when the quake struck he was resting in his single-storey home and it felt as if a heavy truck drove past the roof. However another man said while he did not feel the quake shake like the last time, it was equally loud.
The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department ordered the Incident Command Centre at Surat Thani to take action to reduce panic among the people on the island and publicise safety guidelines while continuously monitoring the situation.
The public was urged to follow updates on the “Thai Disaster Alert” application. Those who suffer from a public disaster should seek help by calling the 1784 hotline 24 hours or adding Line ID @1784DDPM and sending a message there.
