THE ELECTION COMMISSION today (Jun 4) categorically rejected as “utterly groundless” news reports that as many as 149 contestants for senator are largely slated as shoo-ins who have already found their way to the final tier of the race to parliament.
The Election Commission flashed a statement to dismiss the news reports currently circulated online that as many as 149 out of a total of 46,000-plus candidates running in the triple-tiered election for a total of 200 senators are largely known as “big name” favourites who would certainly be picked at district and provincial levels, thus being given easy access to the national-level contest which will cap the complicated, nationwide race.
The polling agency strongly advised members of the public to never take note of such “utterly groundless” speculation online since the triple-tiered election has yet to start on June 9 for the district-level election, June 16 for the provincial-level election and finally June 26 for the national-level election.
All eligible senatorial contestants are divided into 20 categories of profession with which they may currently make or have previously made a living with each being given a couple of choices including themselves to pick from among all fellow contenders at each level.
The winning candidates at district level will pick choices from among those running in other categories to which they themselves do not belong at provincial and national levels.
Over 2,000 applicants have been so far found to be disqualified by the polling agency with more than half currently holding membership of political parties against the law which prohibits it.
