CHAIKASEM NITISIRI has emerged as the hot favourite to be named prime minister on the upcoming Friday, a partisan source said today (Aug. 14).
Chaikasem, a former attorney-general/currently the Pheu Thai party-listed MP, is largely expected to be named head of the Pheu Thai-led coalition government in Friday’s special session among the elected MPs on both sides of the House chamber aisle.
The imminent naming of a new prime minister is to replace former Pheu Thai-attached prime minister Srettha Thavisin who has been removed at the order of the Constitutional Court on grounds of breaking the constitution and code of political ethics by appointing a former convict/former lawyer who had previously worked for de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra to his Cabinet.
The billionaire, powerful Thaksin would ultimately choose to not promote his daughter/Pheu Thai leader Paetongtarn Shinawatra and instead manage to have Chaikasem named for head of the Pheu Thai-led coalition government, the partisan source said.
The current Pheu Thai-led coalition will likely remain in government beyond Friday’s naming of the new prime minister with a simple majority of yea votes from a total of 494 currently performing MPs.
Meanwhile, coalition leaderships scrambled to hold a closed-door meeting at Thaksin’s Chan Song Lah residence a few hours after Srettha had been deposed by court.
Those included Prommin Lertsuridej, a right-hand man of Thaksin/former secretary-general to the deposed prime minister, Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul, deputy Palang Pracharath leader Santi Prompat, Palang Pracharath secretary-general Thammanat Prompao, Ruam Thai Sang Chart leader Pirapan Salirathawipark, Ruam Thai Sang Chart secretary-general Ekkanat Prompan, Prachachart leader Tawee Sodsong, Chart Thai Pattana leader Warawut Silpa-archa and Chaikasem.
