JUST a few days after a landslide killed 13 people and damaged over 50 houses in Phuket’s Karon subdistrict another landslide damaged nine row houses in Mueang (city) district at dawn today (Aug. 28) but fortunately there were no casualties, Amarin TV said.
Pol. Lt. Col. Sakon Krainara, deputy chief at Mueang police station, was alerted at 5.30 a.m. that some dwellings at Thep Buri housing estate (Baan Ku Ku) at Ratsada subdistrict had been damaged by a landslide gushing down a drenched hill at the rear so quickly rushed there with a police team and Kusoldham Phuket Foundation rescuers to investigate and help.
Upon arriving there police saw some residents standing in front of nine damaged two-storey houses amid hours-long continuous rain.
As there was still loud noise emerging from the rear of these houses and there was a risk of more mud sliding down the hill the residents were quickly moved to safety.
Mrs. Kanyarat Chakrawoon, 45, the owner of one of the row houses who only moved in with her family 13 days ago said they were all asleep on the ground floor as the upper floor was still being renovated when at around 5 a.m. she heard a loud noise and upon switching the lights on saw floodwaters flowing in from the kitchen.
They quickly got out but in doing so saw that floodwaters continued to flow in because it was still raining. While only the roof of her house was slightly hit, the unit next door was badly damaged with piles of mud blocking the doorway.
The unidentified owner of another house said mud gushed down the hill because it no longer has any trees. In the past they were trees but over a year ago they were felled them and as the soil could not hold any more water it led to a landslide. He first thought it was lighting but upon coming out saw his neighbours standing in the rain watching the damage.
