Ang Thong, Ayutthaya residents get flood warning

AS THE CHAO Phraya Dam is gearing up to release more water residents living outside the embankment in Ang Thong and Ayutthaya provinces were alerted to immediately move their belongings to higher places as flooding is likely, Amarin TV said today (Aug. 31).

This dam, which is located in Chai Nat province and is key to water management in the Central Plains, is going to discharge nearly 1,400 cubic metres per second of water with this increasing downstream flow by 10-15cm.

Water flowing out of this dam has increased continuously with the latest measurement at C2 point in front of Chiraprawat military camp, Nakhon Sawan province, showing that at 8 a.m. today the flow was 1,394 cubic metres per second.

However the water level above the dam is stable with the latest measurement showing it is 15.95 metres above mean sea level (MSL).

The dam had earlier increased water discharge from 1,300 to 1,349 cubic metres per second to make space for more water flowing down from the north with this raising the water level downstream by 15cm over the past 12 hours reaching 12.28 metres MSL.

As the Royal Irrigation Department plans to adjust the water discharge to around 1,400 cubic metres per second in the next phase, this will lead to downstream water level rising by another 10-15cm over the next 24 hours.

This impending rise will affect low-lying areas outside the embankment with residents living along Phong Pheng canal in Ang Thong province, and Bang Bal canal, Hua Wiang subdistrict in Sena district, Lad Chit and Tha Din Daeng subdistricts in Phak Hai district of Ayutthaya province, told to move their belongings to higher places and monitor the water level.
