THREE YOUTH networks rallied outside the Government House this morning (Sep. 19) to voice their opposition to opening casinos in the country within the planned mega entertainment complexes, Naewna newspaper said.
The Youth and Parents Network led by Ms. Wasinee Sonsab, the New Generation Children Don’t Gamble Network led by Mr. Rawisut Kanitkulseth and representatives of the Children with Immunity Network and parents submitted a letter to Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra asking to halt legislation introducing entertainment complexes housing casinos.
In this letter, which was delivered to her through Mr. Somphas Nilphan, adviser to the Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, they asked that the draft Entertainment Complex Act be scrapped and amendment of Gambling Act of B.E. 2478 (1935) be halted.
Additionally, a policy be introduced requiring all sectors, public, private and social, to promote positive development of youths with measures also be implemented to protect the welfare of children and youths.
They mentioned that the Prime Minister in her government’s policy statement delivered to Parliament had stated an intention to legalise some underground economic activities and promote new forms of tourism by launching full-service entertainment venues which will include casinos.
They questioned whether this will generate income for the public or open the door for capitalists to reap profits.
They also urged her as a mother to consider the future of children and youths.
