Sawaeng lambasted for speaking in defence of Bhumjaithai

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

ELECTION COMMISSION Secretary-General Sawaeng Boonmee was today (Oct, 2) vehemently condemned for verbally defending the Bhumjaithai over a lawsuit earlier filed and yet delayed in pursuit of dissolution of the second largest coalition party.

Patrapong Supaksorn, the lawyer who had filed the lawsuit against the Bhumjaithai under de facto party boss Newin Chidchob, conducted a peaceful protest against the Election Commission secretary-general at the polling agency’s headquarters after he had recently told reporters that the Bhumjaithai would not be found guilty of receiving a sum of 13 million baht in cash donation from Buri Charoen Ltd. Part., the construction firm allegedly owned by Newin’s brother/former Bhumjaithai secretary-general/former transport minister Saksayam Chidchob between 2019 and 2022.

Sawaeng had reportedly commented that the polling agency had not considered the cash granted by the construction firm to the Bhumjaithai as any ill-gained money, however. Buri Charoen Ltd. Part. had reportedly won some 2.2 billion baht worth of construction projects run by the Ministry of Transport over the last several years.

But Patrapong contended that the secretary-general of the “independent” agency had acted as though he were a lawyer who may have spoken in defence of Newin’s camp, given his being a native of Buriram, the largest Bhumjaithai stronghold and home province of the Chidchob family.

Patrapong dared Sawaeng to put his verbal defence of the Bhumjaithai in writing and forward it to the commissioners so, he said, legal action would most certainly be taken against the polling agency’s secretary-general on duty negligence and bias charges.

According to the protesting lawyer, the Election Commission has apparently dragged their feet on the case against the conservative party since the last nine months, compared to that against the Move Forward which had been relatively prompt and led to last August’s dissolution of the reformist party by the Constitutional Court.
