WITH TORRENTIAL rain continuing for the third day today (Nov. 28) in southernmost Yala province all 10 subdistricts surround Yala city are now heavily inundated cutting off travel beyond this province, Naewna newspaper said today (Nov. 28).
Accumulated rainfall over the past two days, Nov. 26-27, reached 579.8 millimetres, triggering flash floods, forest runoffs and mudslides in many areas.
Five districts are heavily inundated, namely Yala city, Bannang Sata, Yaha, Raman and Kabang, comprising 45 subdistricts, 26,565 villages and 27 communities.
Altogether 27,425 households with 107,741 people have been affected while 275 people from 63 households have been evacuated and on top of this 95 roads, 10 bridges and six electric poles have been hit.
An aerial view of Yala city’s Na Tham subdistrict showed that all the houses from village one to four were almost a hundred percent flooded. The water level was continuing to rise as on top of the heavy rain water from Khlong La-ae canal in Yaha district was flowing down. People had to move to the second floor of their houses because floodwater was almost two metres high.
Floodwater was also rising in Sri Bamrung road in Yala city which is the commercial zone.
Officials are working hard at evacuating bedridden patients, the elderly, the disabled and children to shelters along with distributing food and water to the victims.
Meanwhile yellow flags have been raised at nine communities in Hat Yai city, Songkhla province, to warn residents of impending floods while many schools were temporarily closed .
Residents are continuously checking two main canals flowing through Hat Yai city, namely Khlong U-Tapao and Khlong Phuminat Damri or Khlong R.1, which divert floodwater to Songkhla lake with the level having increased in both of them but yellow flags raised in some areas along the latter.
