AN off-duty Crime Suppression Division policeman was shot seven times and later died at the hospital after intervening in a fight between a foreigner and a Thai mechanic at Bangkok’s Sai Mai district last night (Jan. 3), Amarin TV said.
At around 8 p.m., a police team from Sai Mai station rushed to the front of a barber shop at the foot of Chalermpong Bridge where they found Pol. Lt. Banrang Kesaporn, 55, deputy chief for investigation, barely breathing after being shot in his head and body seven times. Rescue workers gave him cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before taking him to the hospital where he later died.
Investigation revealed that the deceased policeman had changed and was wearing half his uniform after finishing his shift and was eating with his friends at a restaurant in this area.
Just then a foreigner and Mr. Anop Srisup, 41, a motorcycle repairman were brawling across the road. The foreigner then ran across and asked for help.
Pol. Lt. Banrang shouted across the road to the mechanic, identifying himself and telling him to stop brawling. An argument broke out between the two of them and the latter then dashed across the road and pumped seven bullets into the policeman.
The Sai Mai police team who had rushed to the scene of the shooting apprehended the suspect and took him to the police station but the pistol he used was not found.
