Phumtham to visit USS Carl Vinson during port call

 

IN A MOVE to strengthen Thai-US relations and exchange strategic information Deputy Prime Minister/Defence Minister Phumtham Vejjayachai and his team will be visiting USS Carl Vinson during its port call to Laem Chabang, Naewna newspaper said today (Jan. 25).

Pol. Gen. Thanathip Sawangsaeng, the ministry’s spokesman, said Phumtham and his team will be boarding the US aircraft carrier at 1 p.m. tomorrow and will be welcomed by Rear Admiral Michael S. Wosje, commander of the 1st Aircraft Carrier Strike Group, and Captain Matthew C. Thomas, commander of the USS Carl Vinson.

During its port call the aircraft carrier’s crew will take shore leave during Jan. 27-31 without any rotation of forces.

USS Carl Vinson is a Nimitz-class nuclear-powered aircraft carrier with a displacement of 97,000 tons and can accommodate up to 6,000 crew members. It has played an important role in the history of the US Navy, having performed missions in various wars including the Persian Gulf War, the Iraq War, and the Afghanistan War, as well as humanitarian missions such as helping victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

It has been dubbed America’s favourite aircraft carrier and has played an important role in demonstrating the power of the US Navy.

Phumtham will be shown some key zones of the aircraft carrier including flight deck, the bridge, the aircraft hangar, the medical department, and the dining room, as well as observe the operation of aircraft on the ship, which demonstrates the potential and advanced military technology.

This visit is an important opportunity to exchange strategic knowledge and strengthen military ties which will help enhance regional security and cooperation.
