THE CHIANG MAI Provincial Court has issued an arrest warrant for Mr. Chaiyamparvaan Manpianjit, nicknamed Pu-ad, a Bangkok MP for Thai Progressive Party, on charges of raping a Taiwanese tourist , Amarin TV and Naewna newspaper said today (Feb. 7).
The alleged incident occurred at around 2 a.m. on Jan. 9 within a hotel in Mueang district with the unidentified Taiwanese woman having returned to her country.
She had told police that she met the MP at a pub in this northern city and they had some drinks together. After that he offered to take her to her room but then raped her.
Pol. Col. Damnoen Kan-ong, deputy chief of Chiang Mai provincial police, said the Taipei Mission is following this case but as he is an MP they could not arrest him.
The provincial police has sent a letter to the police headquarters and they have contacted the House of Representative to release him for legal action. However as the House is still in session they have to wait for a resolution on whether or not to send him for prosecution, he added.
This MP has landed in trouble in the past leading to his expulsion from Move Forward Party, the former guise of People’s Party, over sexual harassment charges filed against him by three women which he denied.
Meanwhile Pol. Lt. Col. Aphat Sukhananth, secretary-general of the House of Representatives, said his office had not yet received this arrest warrant but once it does it will follow the procedure requesting a resolution from the House meeting on sending him to the police to proceed according to the law because the House is currently in session and then doing so if approved.
Reporters are keeping an eye on whether Chaiyamparvaan attends a dinner that opposition parties had arranged for this evening as he has attended all such get-togethers in the past.
Late this afternoon Pol. Lt. Wacharapol Busamongkol, the leader of the Thai Progressive Party, said he had not spoken to Chaiyamparvaan about this case as he had just found out about it.
He added that he wanted to give the MP a chance first and look into the details of the charges filed against him with this being a personal matter as he travelled to the northern city without informing the party,
