Los Angeles – Adrien Brody took home his second leading man Oscar for “The Brutalist,” Mikey Madison took home the best actress statuette and “Anora” was crowned best picture on its way to five awards on Sunday (March 2).

Aside from “Anora” being named best picture and star Mikey Madison getting the best actress Oscar, Sean Baker won three awards for his film: best director, best original screenplay and best film editing.

Led by breakout star Mikey Madison “Anora” is a dramatic comedy following a Brooklyn stripper who is summoned to dance for the wayward son of a Russian oligarch because she speaks his language, eventually falling for and marrying him. Once the news reaches his parents, a wild caper ensues, spanning New York City and Las Vegas.

Director Sean Baker and producers of the film made it a point to emphasize that “Anora” is an independent film and encouraged others to pursue the independent route.

“We made this movie independently. If you’re trying to make independent films please keep doing it, we need more. This is proof,” producer Alex Coco said while accepting the Oscar.

“We made this with very little money, but with all of our hearts. To all the dreamers and young filmmakers out there: tell the stories you want to tell. Tell the stories that move you. I promise you, you will never regret it,” producer Samantha Quan said.

In addition to this Oscar win, “Anora” also won several awards leading up to Hollywood’s biggest night, including the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, Best Picture at the Critics’ Choice Awards, and Best Feature at the Independent Spirit Awards.

Kieran Culkin won the Oscar for best supporting actor for his work on “A Real Pain” and Zoe Saldaña won for her work in “Emilia Pérez.”

“Flow” beat “The Wild Robot” for best animated feature film while Paul Tazewell became the first Black man to win an Oscar for costume design for his work on “Wicked.”
