MANY people got injured at Yala city in the Far South this evening (March 5) after two motorcycle-riding insurgents flung two pipe bombs near a level crossing with one of the exploding, Naewna newspaper said.
At 7:30 p.m., the Yala City Police Radio Centre was alerted of a sound like an explosion on Siros road with Pol. Col. Chatchai Sakdee, superintendent of Yala City police station, and his team accompanied by Mae Thap Thim Yala and Mae Ko Niao Yala rescuers rushing there to inspect.
Upon arrival they found an 18-wheel truck parked near the level crossing and a short distance away there were several people with shrapnel wounds. Rescuers quickly gave them first aid and took them to Yala Hospital with this area also cordoned off.
Initial inquiry revealed that two young men wearing helmets as they rode a motorcycle threw a pipe bomb which exploded followed by another one which did not explode after landing in the middle of the road at the three-way intersection near the railway guard post.
The big truck and several motorcycles were passing just then, leading to many people getting injured.
This is believed to be the work of a group of insurgents operating in this area who wanted to show that they can cause trouble.
Currently, the authorities are in the process of collecting evidence and waiting for the bomb disposal team and the 10th Forensic Science Division in Yala to come and examine the site of the blast.
