FIVE medium-size dams in Krabi have not been damaged by yesterday’s (Apr. 14) 3.5 magnitude earthquake as they have been designed to withstand the force of 7 to 7.5 magnitude quakes, Naewna newspaper said this morning.
Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Narumon Pinyosinwat said the quake at Krabi’s Nuea Khlong district at 2.27 p.m., with a depth of 2km, had peak ground acceleration of 0.03913 g while the Royal Irrigation Department mentioned that these dams were designed to withstand PGA of up to 2 g.
“From inspection of all five medium-size dams in Krabi province, they are in normal condition. The tremors did not affect the stability of dams and irrigation buildings in Krabi and nearby areas in any way because the Royal Irrigation Department has designed dams to withstand earthquakes of approximately 7-7.5 on the Richter scale,” she said.
Meanwhile, a minor quake of 2.4 magnitude occurred in Kanchanaburi at 7.52 p.m. last night and initially there were no reports of any injuries or damage.
The epicentre of this quake was Thong Pha Phum district with a depth of 1km.
