2 gunrunners held for smuggling war weapons to Karens

 

TWO Thai gunrunners were arrested at a checkpoint in Chiang Mai city while driving a pickup truck loaded with war weapons for delivery to Karen National Union (KNU) in Myanmar, TV Channel 7 said this evening (Apr. 22).

Police at the checkpoint on Klong Chonpratan road, Suthep subdistrict, spotted a suspicious pickup truck with a Bangkok licence plate and stopped the vehicle for a search.

Found in a large box hidden at the rear were a large number of war weapons including ten 5.56mm AR-15 rifles, ten 5.56mm magazines and 14 40mm grenade launchers.

The two suspects, Mr. Kraiphet (surname withheld), 28, and Mr. Kitipop, 27, are both from Mae Hong Son province. They confessed that they had been hired to smuggle war weapons for 8,000 to 9,000 baht and had already done so three times.

They were taken to Phupingrachaniwet police station for legal proceedings with investigation being expanded to find their accomplices.
