Thaksin wants Interior portfolio back from Bhumjaithai

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

DE FACTO PHEU THAI BOSS Thaksin Shinawatra today (May 30) expressed his design to have his largest ruling party take charge of the Ministry of Interior in lieu of the Bhumjaithai so that, he said, their government policies could practically have “access” to the people nationwide.

Thaksin, father of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, advised that the Pheu Thai, core of the current coalition, should be given back the interior portfolio from the Bhumjaithai, the second largest coalition partner, in order to give those populist policies “access” to the people in all parts of the country.

“The government policies have not been as yet given access to the people whilst the next general election is now barely two years away,” Thaksin said.

The prime minister’s father said the Bhumjaithai, domineered and steered by de facto party boss Newin Chidchob, need not withdraw from the Pheu Thai-led coalition government only if the interior portfolio, concurrently held by Deputy Prime Minister/Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul, was eventually returned to the Pheu Thai in a new cabinet lineup more or less speculated after legislation for the 2026 government budget has passed an initial approval from the House of Representatives.

The Ministry of Interior is largely viewed as the most influential agency for most people, given the fact that it takes legal control over government officials in the provinces ranging from provincial governors and chief district officers to kamnan (tambon headmen) and puyaiban (village headmen) throughout the country.

Nevertheless, the mega-billionaire/power player would prefer to keep his daughter in power and deny the possibility of her dissolving the House or stepping down in foreseeable future whereas multiple legal battles in court are precariously besieging the woman prime minister and himself.
