A THAI man furious at two people for reporting him to the authorities for encroaching on forest land slashed them to death with his knife then hanged himself in lower northern Phetchabun province today (June 15), Amarin TV said.
Pol. Lt. Thiansin Chaidetkun, an investigator on duty at Phetchabun City police station, quickly took a team to investigate after being informed that there was a knife attack at Pu Lamai Herbal Garden.
At the scene he found Ms. Wandee (surname withheld), 60, lying dead at the side of the road after being slashed three times at the back of the head, once in the middle of the back and once in the arm.
The perpetrator, later identified as Mr. Chaliew Phromlat, 64, rode up a mountain behind the herbal garden after killing the victim with police pursuing him with difficulty because it is a steep road and as it had been raining earlier, it was wet and slippery.
They finally had to walk three kilometres before they found another victim slashed to death, identified as Mr. Yutthakaew (surname withheld), 78, and about a hundred metres away they saw Chaliew’s body hanging from a tree. Nearby in a fertiliser bag was a sharp knife with traces of blood on it.
In addition, there were three dogs guarding the perpetrator’s body with police only able to get close after his son came and caught them.
Investigation revealed Chaliew had been arrested by forestry officials for encroaching and clearing forest land behind the herbal garden earlier this month and was later released on bail to fight the case.
He believed that his two victims had reported him to the police and were angry with them, his son told police, and two to three days earlier he had told him that if he did anything he would hang himself up on the mountain but he did not think he would actually do so.
Yutthakaew’s grandson Mr. Manas said that Wandee divided two rai of land in the herbal garden for Chaliew to make a living but he later encroached on the forest. She had warned him but he refused to listen to her and they had argued over this many times until he was arrested earlier this month.
This made Chaliao angry and as believed his two victims were the ones who reported him to forestry officials, he killed them then himself.
