AN EARTHQUAKE measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale jolted Andaman and Nicobar Islands at 4.14 p.m. Thailand time today (June 16), approximately 568 kilometres northwest of Mueang district, Phang Nga province, Amarin TV said.
The epicentre was 10.889°N, 93.660°E on Google Maps and the depth 47 kilometers.
On March 28 a magnitude 7.7 – 7.9 earthquake struck the Sagaing region of Myanmar, with an epicentre close to Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city. The strike-slip shock achieved a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of X (Extreme).
It was the most powerful earthquake to strike Myanmar since 1912, and the second deadliest in Myanmar’s modern history, surpassed only by upper estimates of the 1930 Bago earthquake. The earthquake caused extensive damage in Myanmar and significant damage in neighbouring Thailand. Hundreds of homes were also damaged in Yunnan, China, while more than 400 apartments were affected in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Wikipedia said.
This quake led to the State Audit skyscraper in Bangkok collapsing killing 96 people, including seven unrecovered victims.
