THE CAMBODIAN military suddenly announced the closure of a border crossing in Ubon Ratchathani province this morning (June 19) with the Thai side also having to follow suit because no one could cross over to trade and do other business and this confused local people about what was happening, Thai Rath newspaper said.
Reporters went to investigate and found that a sign had been posted at entrance to Huai Chan Daeng checkpoint leading to Aan Ma border crossing within Yod Dom wildlife sanctuary saying it cannot be crossed because Cambodia has closed it to people from both sides with the Thai side too having to do so by default.
This followed Second Army Region Commander Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang having signed an order giving the control of all border crossings between the two countries to the Suranaree Task Force for the safety of the people.
Thai officers then reduced the opening of this border crossing from two days a week to one weekly day starting June 12, and this from 9 a.m. to noon.
