THE House of Representatives today (July 16) overwhelmingly passed the second and third readings of the draft Labour Protection Act wherein female employees are given 120-day paid maternity leave and their husbands allowed 15 days of paid leave to help take care of the new-born babies with the legislation now going to the Senate for consideration, Naewna newspaper said.
This legislation was revised after the first reading increasing maternity leave from 98 days to 120 days with 416 MPs casting yea votes, no nay votes, one abstention and three MPs not voting.
Increasing maternity leave is aimed at enhancing employees’ quality of life and strengthening family bonds.
Under this legislation employers have to pay 50% of daily wage to their female employees during the 120-day maternity leave while paying full daily wage to male employees taking leave to help out for maximum 15 days
