Michelin-star chef’s restaurant fined in omelet controversy

A RESTAURANT operated by Michelin-star chef Jay Fai was fined 2,000 baht after diners alerted the authorities that they had to pay a whopping 4,000 baht for a crab meat omelet that was listed in the menu at 1,500 baht, Amarin TV said today (Aug. 20).

Mr. Ronnarong Poolpipat, secretary-general of the Consumer Protection Board, assigned Mr. Anupong Charoenwet, director of Consumer Protection Division 2, to liaise with the Commerce Ministry’s  Department of Internal Trade in investigating this issue.

The department focused on whether the restaurant complied with the Prices of Goods and Services Act B.E. 2542 (1999) while the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) checked whether the listed price for the crab omelet could be considered false or misleading advertising.

The department has now fined this restaurant 2,000 baht for not displaying the price of the crab meat omelet with the restaurant told to quickly show clearer prices of its dishes.

However, OCPB said while the diners had alerted the authorities about the high price for this omelet, they had not filed a complaint.

If a complaint had been filed OCPB would act quickly and fairly to the parties involved.

Moreover, the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office has ordered OCPB to speed up handling complaints from consumers and implement Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s “Traffy Fondue” system in doing so.
