CAMBODIAN soldiers crossed over to Thai territory in Surin province yesterday (Aug. 22) and fired at Thai troops with landmines, nails and grenade launcher shells found in the area after they retreated, Naewna newspaper said today.
Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, the army spokesperson, said evidence of this action by Cambodian soldiers has been submitted to Interim Observer Team (IOT) from eight Asean member countries, including Brunei, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam, totaling 14 members, led by Maj, Gen. Samsul Rizal Bin Musa, the Malaysian Defence Attaché in Thailand.
The Second Army Region informed the headquarters that at 4 p.m. yesterday a local military unit detected two to three Cambodian soldiers at Bak Dai subdistrict, Phanom Dong Rak district, Surin, approximately 100 metres from the operational line within Thai territory. Based on their attire, they appeared to be members of Cambodia’s Bodyguard Headquarters unit. This is an elite and heavily armed security unit within Khmer armed forces tasked with protecting top government officials.
Upon seeing the Thai unit the Cambodian soldiers opened fire thus forcing them to flee.
However once this area was secured one PMN-2 landmine was found near the spot where Cambodian troops were lying in ambush. After a bomb disposal team carried out a detailed inspection today two more similar landmines were found, taking the total to three, as well as two grenade launcher shells and a large quantity of nails.
Maj. Gen. Winthai said this incident shows that Cambodia has violated the ceasefire agreement on several points including provocation, territorial incursion and use of mines to attack the Thai side.
Their action contradicts Cambodia’s attempts to distort the Thai position to the international community, claiming Thailand is the aggressor, he said, adding evidence confirms that Cambodia has consistently committed acts of aggression and violated agreements, including the Ottawa Convention.
