HUNDREDS of Thai villagers gathered at Ban Nong Chan, Sa Kaeo province, for the second day today (Aug. 27) to demonstrate their patriotism after some Cambodians had earlier dismantled the barbed-wire border fence and crossed over, Amarin TV said.
Thai soldiers had rolled out additional barbed wire and put up barriers to keep the demonstrators at the designated spot today but a woman asked the soldiers why they had done this after which the demonstrators started dismantling the barrier.
A representative then again asked Thai troops stationed there why they had put up additional barriers and was told that the barbed wire was rolled out last night and not yet removed while agreeing to do so and open the way for the villagers to go to the same spot on the frontline they had assembled yesterday.
Meanwhile Cambodian villagers who had put up a Cambodian flag in front of the barbed wire fence at Ban Nong Chan removed it today after some Cambodian soldiers intervened.
It is suspected that the flag was put up there to create social media content.
In another development, Second Army Region Commander Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang said that the two neighbouring countries had reached an 11-point agreement at a Regional Border Committee meeting which took place at the second-floor conference room of the Chong Sangam Customs Office in Phu Sing district, Sisaket province, with Gen. Pow Heng, commander of Cambodia’s Fourth Military Region, co-chairing it.
Lt. Gen. Boonsin later told the press that there had been two bombings by Cambodians since the ceasefire was signed and countermeasures remained at the same level.
At today’s meeting the Cambodian side refused to accept that they had violated the truce while insisting that they are strictly complying with the Ottawa Treaty.
However if more landmines are planted in Thai territory Thai army is prepared to respond as this constitutes infringement of Thai sovereignty, he added.
