A HEAVY clash erupted between troops and southern insurgents in a Songkhla district after a search operation was launched to flush out a group of these extremists from a rubber plantation, Amarin TV said this morning (Sep. 11).
Security forces targeted a large rubber plantation in Ban Huai Tao, Khuha subdistrict, Saba Yoi district, after being tipped off that some insurgents were hiding there and preparing to cause unrest along Songkhla-Yala border area.
Eight soldiers got injured after their armoured vehicle plunged down a ravine in Na Thawi district due to brake failure as they were heading to support those fighting against insurgents in Saba Yoi.
A local resident said that this village road has many curves and deep ravines.
The search led to a big clash between troops and insurgents raising tension in the province. Security forces have thrown a cordon around the plantation to pressure the insurgent and prevent them from escaping.
The operation continues in the cordoned off zone with no reports of casualties so far aside for those who got injured in the armoured vehicle accident.
