Red Shirts gather in front of prison to support Thaksin

A GROUP of Red Shirt followers gathered in front of Klong Prem prison to support de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra who was ordered back to jail by the Supreme Court to serve a one-year sentence with his six-month-long fakeout at Police Hospital until his release on parole early last year not holding up, Amarin TV said this afternoon  (Sep. 13).

The Red Shirt activists started gathering in front of the prison from 10 a.m. onwards to participate in the “Lunch in Front of the Prison” activity.

Ms. Yardthip Santisungnoen, one of the supporters, said she joined this gathering because she is at the forefront of their struggle for democracy from 2010 onwards and many news agencies know her.

Today’s goal is to cheer up Thaksin and try to get him moved to a house arrest at his Ban Chan Song La residence.

“If a law can be written it can also be amended,” she said.

Officials said they could not move Thaksin to a house arrest at his residence because they do not have an EM bracelet to put on his ankle but if this is the case the public could poll in money and buy one for him, she mentioned.

She added that while she did not know how many Red Shirts came today, she did see that there were around 200 policemen guarding the front of the prison from 10 a.m. onwards.

Reporters said that as the Red Shirts began flocking there a man appeared and started questioning them with this leading to an argument.

They chased him out and called the police to apprehend him, with the unit there searching his body and motorcycle then taking him to the police station.

Thaksin had been earlier sentenced in absentia to eight years in jail which had been eventually curtailed under a royal decree to only one year.
