Road collapsed above subway station construction site: Chadchart

BANGKOK Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said the huge sinkhole that appeared in front of Vajira Hospital in Dusit district early this morning (Sep. 24) is just above where the Purple Line’s new underground station is being built with soil and water from a large pipe that burst still gushing in, Amarin TV said;

This subway station, called Vajira Hospital station, has two tunnels leading to it with one of them being damaged by the collapse of the road and its cracks allowing soil to pour in while water from the burst main is also flooding in but fortunately there are no casualties.

The situation has stabilized somewhat as even though soil is still slipping in the water supply has been cut and this should slow it down.

The Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand was told to both cut power and power lines as it is feared that surrounding buildings could collapse. The hospital building is not in any danger as there is an earthen wall protecting it but the nearby Samsen police station is at risk as the soil gushing out has now exposed its piles, Chadchart said.

A 100-metre radius around the 30-metre-by-30-metre sinkhole has to be watched because it is approximately 50 metres deep.  While the intersection in this area would be opened to traffic, surrounding buildings without walls protecting them are considered dangerous and vulnerable as piles are now visible.

There is a pickup truck that has to be towed because if it falls into the sinkhole just as a Samsen police station vehicle and two electricity pillars did this morning it will cause a complication.

Chadchart warned that it will take considerable time to resolve this problem to go by previous similar incidents such as the collapse of Nong Bon Lake tunnel.
