Angkhana, Sunai ask for protection after harassment and death threats

SENATOR  Angkhana Neelapaijit and human rights defender Sunai Phasuk today (Oct. 18) asked for police protection after severe online harassment and death threats over their critical comments on a social media influencer blaring ghostly sounds plus persistent aircraft engine noises at two border villagers in the middle of the night to drive out Cambodian encroachers, Amarin TV and Naewna newspaper said.

Mr. Guntouch Pongpaiboonwet, or Gun Jompalang, took a sound system to Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaeo villages in Sa Kaeo province on the night of Oct. 11 and played the creepy soundtracks for sometime with this leading to Angkhana warning that any act that incites fear or psychologically impacts civilians, even those in a conflict and especially vulnerable groups, may constitute psychological torture under the Convention Against Torture, to which Thailand is a party.

She also mentioned that Mr. Keo Remy, chairman of the Cambodian Human Rights Committee, wrote to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights that between 10.44 p.m. and 12.04 a.m., loudspeakers emitted noises described as “haunting sounds reminiscent of wailing ghosts.”  This was followed by persistent aircraft engine noises from 3.22 a.m. to 3.53 a.m. deliberately targeting nearby Cambodian villagers with the intention of disturbing and intimidating them.

Sunai, a senior academic at Human Rights Watch, had also warned on a television show that depriving people of sleep is a form of torture.

The two of them went to the national police headquarters today where they petitioned National Police Chief Gen, Kittirat Panpetch to protect them.

They mentioned that online harassment included accusations of unpatriotism and questions like “Are You Cambodian?”

They insisted that they loved Thailand just as much as any other Thai citizen and it is possible to hold different opinions but what is happening is now beyond freedom of speech therefore they had to stand up for themselves

Sunai stated that although there are currently no police officers protecting him like Angkana, he too has been threatened with death on social media. He emphasised that he acted out of good will for the country and did not want Thailand to lose ground on the world stage.
