THAILAND is facing heavy to very heavy rainfall over the weekend (Nov 7-9) as the tailend of Typhoon Kalmaegi slams the country after killing 26 people in the Philippines while weeklong flooding left 40 dead in Vietnam.

At 4 p.m. today (Nov. 4) the Thai Meteorological Department said Kalmaegi had moved from the Philippines to the South China Sea and is roaring ahead in a slightly north-northwestly direction at a speed of approximately 20km an hour.

The powerful typhoon is expected to make a landfall over central Vietnam on Nov. 6-7, then weaken into a tropical storm and further dwindle into a depression.

As a result of Kalmaegi’s influence, upper Thailand will be lashed with heavy to very heavy rain during Nov. 7-9 in some areas starting with the Northeast then spreading to the East, Central, and Northern regions, respectively. Residents are alerted to beware of torrential rain which could trigger flash floods, mudslides and rivers overflowing their banks. Farmers should brace for the possibility of their crops being damaged.

Strong storms will likely rage in the Andaman Sea with waves being two to three metres high and over three metres amidst thunderstorms. Sailors should exercise caution and avoid setting forth to sea in areas where there is a thunderstorm while small boats would remain ashore during Nov. 5-7.

Typhoon Kalmaegi has left at least 26 people dead in the Philippines, mostly in flooding set off by the storm, which barreled across the central part of the country today, disaster response officials said. Floodwaters trapped scores of people on their roofs and submerged cars.

A Philippine air force helicopter with five personnel on board crashed in a separate incident in southern Agusan del Sur province while flying to help provide humanitarian assistance to provinces battered by Kalmaegi.

The Super Huey chopper crashed near Loreto town and efforts were underway to locate the air force personnel aboard, the military’s Eastern Mindanao Command said in a statement.

Kalmaegi was last spotted over the coastal waters of Jordan town in the central province of Guimaras with sustained winds of 130 kph (81 mph) and gusts of up to 180 kph (112 mph). It was forecast to blow away into the South China Sea late Tuesday or early Wednesday after hitting the western province of Palawan.

Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV, deputy administrator of the Office of Civil Defence, said that at least 26 people were reported killed — many in flooding in Cebu province and other central island provinces pummeled by Kalmaegi, the 20th tropical cyclone to batter the Philippine archipelago this year. Details of those typhoon deaths were still being verified, he said.

In Vietnam the death toll from a week of flooding and record rains in the central zone of the country rose to 40 today (Nov 4), authorities said, as Typhoon Kalmaegi threatened the battered region.

Vietnam’s central belt has been deluged by torrential rains, turning streets into canals, bursting riverbanks and inundating some of the country’s most-visited historic sites.

Up to 1.7m fell over one 24-hour period in a downpour, breaking national records.

The fatalities occurred in Hue, Da Nang, Lam Dong and Quang Tri provinces, according to the environment ministry’s disaster management agency, which said six people remained missing.
