A THAI-CAMBODIAN General Border Committee (GBC) meeting that took place in Chanthaburi province late afternoon today (Dec. 24) to discuss border agreements lasted less than an hour, Amarin TV said
Upon passing the Ban Phak Krad permanent border checkpoint in Pong Nam Ron district at 4.24 p.m. the Cambodian delegation was greeted by the Thai delegation and security officers. The media was only allowed to photograph them before the meeting began, which commenced immediately.
The meeting took place at a conference room of the 4th Marine Ranger Unit, adjacent to the permanent border crossing, but only continued till 5 p.m. when the Khmer delegation departed.
Lt. Gen. Nuttapong Praokaew, deputy chief of staff of the Thai armed forces, as GBC secretary-general chaired the meeting for the Thai side, while Maj. Gen. Nhem Boraden, deputy head of the Office of the Minister of Defence, led the Cambodian team with Brig. Gen. Hom Kim, Cambodian military attaché to Thailand, and two other members of the working group accompanying him
Thailand had sent a letter to Malaysia yesterday refusing to move the GBC meeting to Kuala Lumpur as requested by Cambodia in the morning.
Thailand insisted that the meeting be held in Chanthaburi province to find a bilateral solution to the fighting along the border and not in a third country.
Later Lt. Gen. Nattapong said that at today’s first meeting the representatives of the two countries discussed the agenda and issues to be discussed tomorrow as is the normal procedure.
Tomorrow’s meeting will start at 9 a.m. at the same place with the full Cambodian delegation expected to attend.
The Cambodian team’s stance at this meeting was normal and this is a positive sign with representatives from the two countries having held several rounds of discussions previously in Malaysia and Cambodia’s Koh Kong province, he added.
Asked by reporters whether a ceasefire was discussed, Lt. Gen. Nattapong replied that he could not divulge details.
